I’ve had the complete fortune of visiting the factories in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua and it was amazing, I learned so much as well as many new and different things each time I went. Each morning at the conference table at General Cigar’s facility in the DR there were pastries, fruit, coffee and of course cigars – lots and lots of cigars.
There were 6 boxes placed in the middle of the table running from light shade Connecticut wrapped all the way to dark and full-bodied, and everything in between. During the morning meetings alone, I would smoke 3 full cigars and the day was just getting started. Though lunch there’d be two more, through dinner a couple more, and of course a wonderful after dinner sweet maduro cigar to cap it all off with coffee and a glass of rum, or three.
For one full week I smoked 8 cigars a day and the crazy thing is that I never had more than 3 in a day before that. After around the 4th day it just came natural having that many smokes and I looked forward to and enjoyed each and every one. (And the fact that they were free sure didn’t hurt at all.) I know, it’s crazy, right? But when your system gets used to them, they go down so easy. But the hardest part of all was when I got home and tried to layoff off cigars for a week. Serious withdrawal pains hit and I was a total mess.
But, guess what? 8 in one day is NOT my record. A few years back we had a bunch of cigar smoking, whisky drinking hoodlums over at my house for my friend’s 40th birthday. We started in the morning and went straight through to the following morning and we were all a complete and total wreck. Now, not just because of the incessant drinking or the pig-like food devouring. But it was because we had a contest between us for most cigars smoked in 24 hours would win my buddy’s unopened bottle of Balvenie 21 year-old Portwood Scotch which goes for around $250 a bottle.
Most the guys could only do 3 or 4, thinking they were all badass. But me and Johnny McGuire showed them all up when were at 8 stogies each. But at around 3am old Johnny boy passed out for good. I vividly remember picking up a La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduro, cutting and then lighting it as one of my drunken buddies filmed it for proof on his phone.
Yeah I smoked 9 cigars in one day and I actually thought I was a bad ass – until I talked to shop owners who smoke 8 or 9 every day, people in the factories who smoked 10 – 12 a day, and s few master blenders who smoked up to 20 in one day. Holy good God, I said 20! Yeah, I agree with you that ten per day is nuts, but 20?! Are you kidding me? And the main thing is that these are all healthy guys and they’re always happy and in a good mood! I honestly think that cigar smoking is actually good for you… I’m not kidding one bit!
So, that’s my record, 9 in one day, which ain’t bad for a regular everyday cigar lovin’ fool. I’d love you to share in the comments below the article the most you’ve smoked in one day and what cigars were they?

This was in Chattanooga, TN for an event called the tweet up. I logged all my cigars on the drive up, both days of the event, and the drive home. It wound up being 36 sticks over a four day period. This was the list from that Saturday.
